Road Trip '20: Nyssa, OR → Maupin, OR

The last place we stayed before saying goodbye to Michael and Anne was in the Owyee Canyonlands in Nyssa, OR. We arrived really late to the campgrounds, so we couldn’t see our surroundings very well, but we understood that this area, and the yurt we stayed in, was likely the greatest stop of our entire trip.

After we settled in, we stargazed on the deck and saw nearly forty-five minutes of continual satellites, perfectly aligned, in the night sky. We were kind of absolutely losing our minds, to be honest. 😲We figured we were seeing Starlink satellites, and we later found out that was true. Unlike a normal satellite spotting where you’d point up in the sky and describe the location of the faint, moving light, these satellites couldn’t be missed. The fact that our last night was in an area with no light pollution and these satellites were crossing the Owyee Canyonlands at this specific time felt pretty magical.

Leaving Nyssa, Michael and Anne had a trip to Seattle ahead of them, though Marshal and I didn’t have to return to our Vancouver, WA, reality for a few more days. Before going our separate ways, though, we stopped at a hot spring right down the road from our Airbnb.

So, Nyssa, OR, is just across the ID border where my cousin’s farm is located in Parma, ID. (We visited his farm at the very beginning of our trip, though I didn’t take any iPhone photos when there.) Before we got on the road for Maupin, OR, we had to stop at Mike’s farm again to retrieve something we accidentally left behind. That stop meant I was able to give love to Mike’s dog, Roadie, one more time. 😍

When in Maupin, we stayed at our friends’ place where we were able to relax, have a few drinks, sweat our faces off, and play with the many dogs of Maupin. Our friends, Kate and Andy, are the owners of Deschutes River Adventures, and on one of our days there, Kate was able to sneak away from work to take Marshy and I out on a “fun float”. Kate said she’s never heard someone scream as loud as I did while on the float, but I guess you could say I had “fun”. 😆
