Days 7 + 8: Munich

After dropping off the rental car in Rome, we flew to Munich, where we met and hung out with an awesome, welcoming couple for the next two days. They were actually our AirBnB hosts, Uli and Serena, and they have a rad penthouse in Munich that overlooks Olympic Park. They gave us a tour of the place, beers in hand, upon arrival.

We got in on the night of June 14, and with the next day being my 30th birthday, we awoke to a really sweet birthday surprise from Serena! (When Marsh booked this AirBnB, he told Serena that I was turning 30 when we’d be at their place.) She decorated their kitchen table with pretzels filled with cream cheese and green onions, a strawberry cake, and even kombucha (which she noted was hard to find, but knew us PNW friends would enjoy). So sweet! πŸ’•

Marsh accidentally spilled some beer in the kitchen, but we all laughed about it, and Uli snapped this photo as the spill was cleaned. πŸ˜‚

A view from Olympic Park, which we visited the day of my birthday. When I lived in Seoul, Olympic Park was within walking distance of my apartment, so visiting the one in Munich was especially cool for me!

Though I was excited about the special birthday dinner Marsh had planned, I woke up at 4 a.m. that morning and had a hard time falling back asleep. So, I was quite tired as we watched a World Cup game in a bar, but Marsh did a spectacular job of making me laugh and stay awake for the dinner (where Uli and Serena surprised me)!

After dinner, Uli and Serena acted as our personal tour guides and drove us around downtown Munich, pointing out points of interest and even stopping so we could explore a bit.

They really went above and beyond as our AirBnB hosts and we are so thankful we were able to meet them and exchange stories and laughs. Uli even gave me his sweater after dinner because he noticed I was cold as we explored! 😭

Thank you to Marshal, of course, and Uli and Serena for making my 30th abroad one to remember. πŸ’•
